Some applications work best locally. Others need a hosted backend to share information between users or devices. The architecture should follow that need, with authentication, databases and clearly defined APIs. Shopping is a concrete example under development: Android and web clients sharing household lists and inventory through a common backend. It is not yet publicly released.
